Our Story
At A Step in the Right Direction, we’re more than just an organization; we’re a community of people who care deeply about helping others move forward. We see the potential in every individual, even when the world tells them otherwise. That’s why we’re here: to fill in the gap, offer support, and help people take real steps toward a better future.
We work with individuals who have been overlooked, underserved, or simply need someone to believe in them. Whether it’s navigating life after trauma, finding stable housing, building confidence, or accessing the tools to succeed, our mission is to meet people where they are and walk alongside them. Every journey starts with one step. At SRD, we help make sure it’s in the right direction.
A Step in the Right Direction began with one woman’s vision to turn pain into purpose. Kayla Davis, our founder and executive director, grew up witnessing the weight of generational hardship within her own family and throughout her community. She saw what it meant to struggle without support, and how many people simply needed someone to believe in them.
Rather than let those experiences harden her, Kayla used them as a call to action. She created SRD as a response to the needs she knew all too well: a safe space for people to heal, rebuild, and reclaim their path forward. Today, that vision lives on through our programs, many of which are directly inspired by Kayla’s story. From mentorship and life skills workshops to community outreach, each initiative is designed to meet people where they are and help them take meaningful steps toward stability, confidence, and independence.
